Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Tax Collections and assistance to taxpayers. Balances of daily tax collections. Sale of decals and assistance to taxpayers with renewal of motor vehicle registration and balances of daily decal sales. Processing bi-monthly exonerations, as well as Redemptions received via the West Virginia State Auditor as they arrive. Taking photos and printing cards for Concealed Weapons Permits. Collecting and receipting money for accident reports and service of process. Collecting and receipting monies from other various offices i.e.: Health Department, Community Corrections. Receipting in end of the month reports from the Barbour County Assessor’s Office, County Clerk’s Office and Magistrate’s Office, paying out to correct accounts as needed. Confirming proper logging of all accident reports and service of processes for the month and paying out accordingly. All other responsibilities/duties as directed by the Chief Tax Deputy or Sheriff.

Qualifications Requirements: To perform this job successfully, applicant should have experience working with the public and cash handling. The requirements below are representative of the knowledge, skill or ability required.

Other Qualifications: All Applicants must consent to a criminal background check. Those records must be free from all but the most minor offenses.
Education and/or Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Also, must be able to communicate effectively with taxpayers and employees. Ability to read and prepare short correspondence and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to citizens, co-workers and others.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out uninvolved written or oral instructions.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic computer knowledge of Microsoft Office software and Word Processing. Operation of other office machines, i.e.: fax, copier, telephone and other standard office equipment.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the work environment is usually moderate but may occasionally be loud.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk and reach with hands or arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand, climb or balance; and stoop, kneel crouch or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

The Barbour County Assessor’s Office is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Front Counter Clerk. Duties of the Front Counter Clerk include, but are not limited to: greet customers by phone or in person, assist tax payers with forms and property returns, manage incoming and outgoing mail, scan documents, create supplemental tax tickets, collect dog/sheep & goat tax, and provide general office management assistance.

Qualifications: High School Diploma required. Must have previous experience working with the public and have a friendly, outgoing personality. Ability to multi-task. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite of Procedure preferred.

Barbour County Deputy Sheriff

The Barbour County Sheriff’s Department is actively recruiting motivated and responsible individuals for the position of Deputy Sheriff. The base pay is commensurate on prior service and education. In addition to base pay, all Deputies receive Hazard Pay. Additional compensation includes Recertification Pay (based on years of service) as well as opportunities for overtime. Paid time off includes Vacation and Sick Leave (based on years of service) and fifteen paid holidays.  Benefits include Deputy Sheriff’s Retirement Plan, PEIA Insurance, Guardian Dental-Vision Insurance and Life Insurance. Certified   applicants will receive a $5000 sign on bonus ($2500 upon employment and $2500 upon one-year anniversary). Modern equipment and training are provided by The Barbour County Sheriff’s Department including uniforms, weapons, cruiser, and body armor.

Compensation example: a non-certified deputy with no prior experience who works four extra shifts per month would gross approximately $32000 annually.

All applicants must possess a High School Diploma or GED and have a valid WV Driver’s License. Applicants must pass a written civil service test, a background investigation, oral interviews, polygraph test and a physical agility test. The physical test consists of 18 pushups, 28 sit ups, and a 1.5 mile run in under 14 minutes and 36 seconds.
